Learning with The Fongs

Steve and Ingrid Fong are a tag-team teaching duo with extremely diverse skills, education, and experience to teach you to play the music YOU wish to master. Whether you took lessons as a child and have forgotten some basics, are a beginning adult wishing to pursue classical music study, are a teenager looking to learn chord progressions to play rock tunes, or are the parent of a small child hoping to enrich your family's life, we are here to help you realize your potential. Our approach is all-encompassing--we will not simply teach you to "play songs." There are enough teachers who are willing to take your money teaching you a song at a time, keeping you dependent on them indefinitely. We teach you to teach yourself so that you'll be able to ditch us eventually and be confident in your understanding of what happens in the music.

Lessons you'll enjoy taking!
Our lessons are rarely dull...we incorporate listening, performing, attending performances, (and occasionally even a little playing!) into our classes. A piano lesson may involve hand-drumming to learn rhythmic principles, a composition lesson may include listening to your favourite Beatles tunes (okay, it might be our favourite too). Ingrid has been known to make students dance every once in a while to understand certain rhythmic concepts...but it works! Learning a concept cerebrally is not going to make you a great player, but understanding and feeling the music will. We currently offer lessons for classical piano, popular piano, piano-vocal style, classical percussion, theory/history and composition.
